Yes, they are apprentice geishas. They do come out during the day from time to time.
OK, so that's why. I actually saw two women with full white geisha-like faces and gowns in Kyoto in the daytime a few years ago. I was wondering whether they were geisha or tourists dressed up as, as unlikely as it seemed. They must have been maiko.
